P2.5 Million in Tourism Projects Mark Buglasan Festival Booth Contest


DUMAGUETE CITY: The provincial government of Negros Oriental has allocated PHP2.5 million in tourism projects as prizes for the Buglasan Festival booth contest, an event that began Friday and celebrates the region’s cultural and tourism offerings.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Buglasan Festival, an annual event held every October, commenced with the opening of the Buglasan Photo Competition and Booth Fair at Freedom Park in the capital city. The photo competition offers PHP60,000 in prizes, while the 23 booths representing various local government units will compete for substantial tourism project prizes: PHP1 million for first place, PHP750,000 for second place, and PHP500,000 for third place.

The festival’s opening program featured the presentation of candidates for the Gandang NegOrense and Miss Negros Oriental pageants, which includes 35 contestants, among them 14 transwomen. Other highlights of the opening night included the Palihi ritual, the Buglasan Moda fashion runway showcasing local d
esigners, and the Ginebra San Miguel Buglasan Music Fest.

Security for the festival is a priority, with more than 700 personnel deployed from various agencies, including the Philippine National Police, Armed Forces of the Philippines, Philippine Coast Guard, and others. Governor Manuel Sagarbarria, during a send-off ceremony at the Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office, emphasized the importance of vigilance among security forces and the public, particularly with the upcoming elections. Despite no reports of serious threats, officials remain on high alert to ensure the safety of visitors, including expected attendance by senators, as the festival continues until October 27.
