P96-M flood control projects in San Carlos City completed

MALASIQUI: The construction of the two slope protection projects along the Agno River in San Carlos City, Pangasinan has been completed, ensuring the safety of residents of the villages of Bogaoan and Guelew and their properties.

Department of Public Works and Highways-Ilocos Region (DPWH-1) information officer Esperanza Tinaza, in a statement on Wednesday, said the structure in Barangay Bogaoan measures 355.47 meters and costs around PHP48.99 million, while the 287-meter slope protection structure in Barangay Guelew measures costs about PHP47.78 million.

She said the projects, funded under this year national budget, aim to prevent destructive impacts of heavy rainfall and typhoons such as flooding and soil erosion or landslide.

Construction started last Feb. 6 and completed last April 24.

Aside from protecting the surrounding environment, DPWH-Ilocos Director Ronnel Tan said the slope protection also ensures resilience of infrastructure in the area.

‘The projects include the construction of a structural
concrete revetment supported by a z-type sheet pile, installation of gravel fill, reinforcing steel bar, formworks, hydraulic gate, and reinforced concrete pipe culvert to lessen the risk of landslide,’ he said.

Officials of the beneficiary villages are grateful for the project as it is timely, especially with the expected effects of the La Niña phenomenon.
