Manila: The Australian government has donated more than a dozen very high frequency (VHF) base radios to enhance the communication capabilities of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in Palawan. This initiative aims to improve the communication linkages between PCG assets and stations in the region.
According to Philippines News Agency, this donation is part of Australia’s broader PHP328 million civil maritime cooperation with the Philippines. The cooperation includes various components such as vessel remediation, aerial drones, postgraduate scholarships, operational training, and annual Law of the Sea courses. Australian Ambassador to the Philippines HK Yu emphasized the strong cooperation between the two nations, stating that they will continue to address the PCG’s needs as strategic partners.
The Australian Embassy in Manila noted that the donation is intended to bolster the strategic capabilities of PCG Palawan. It aims to enhance the PCG’s ability to monitor maritime incidents, respond to emergencies, and
coordinate maritime operations, all in support of its ongoing modernization efforts. The donation was officially handed over during a ceremony at PCG headquarters in Manila, attended by PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gavan and newly appointed Commodore Dennis Rem Labay, PCG Palawan district commander.
Representing the Australian government were the Secretary of Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Jan Adams and Ambassador HK Yu. Earlier this year, a memorandum of understanding on Enhanced Maritime Cooperation was signed between Australia and the Philippines, further strengthening their collaboration in the civil maritime sector.
