PCG Suspends Sea Travels from Cebu Due to Tropical Storm Kristine

CEBU CITY: The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in Central Visayas has suspended sea travels from northern Cebu province amid safety concerns posed by Tropical Storm Kristine. The suspension affects vessels of all types and tonnage traveling to Eastern Samar, Northern Samar, Samar, Leyte, Biliran, Southern Leyte, Dinagat Island, and Surigao del Norte, including Siargao and Bucas Grande Group.

According to Philippines News Agency, Ensign Jay-R Alguidano, commander of PCG-Northern Cebu, announced this precautionary measure to ensure passenger safety. The advisory also extends to suspending the movement of vessels and watercrafts with gross tonnage of 250 and below within the Northern Cebu Coast Guard Station’s jurisdiction. Operations may resume once weather conditions improve, as declared by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), and will be subject to existing guidelines under Memorandum Circulars No. 02-23 and 03-01.

The public, particularly those in coastal
communities and fisherfolk, have been advised to avoid sea-related activities to prevent accidents. The Cebu Port Authority had already suspended trips from various piers on Monday, including those managed in Cebu City.

While the PCG Central Visayas station reported no passengers stranded due to the storm, the city government noted over 30 passengers bound for Leyte and Zamboanga were stranded and temporarily sheltered at a gymnasium in San Roque. The city’s Department of Social Welfare and Services has provided food assistance to those affected.
