Philippine Airlines Adds Third Weekly Flight from Borongan to Cebu

BORONGAN—Philippine Airlines (PAL) is set to initiate a third weekly flight from Borongan Airport to Cebu starting September 18, aiming to boost regional connectivity by supplementing the current flights scheduled on Mondays and Fridays.

According to the Philippines News Agency, Borongan City’s government announced the additional service this Friday, expressing optimism about the increased travel options for residents and visitors of Eastern Samar. Mayor Jose Ivan Dayan Agda remarked, “This partnership brings renewed hope to the people of Borongan and Eastern Samar. The steady rise in passengers utilizing Borongan Airport is a clear sign that air transportation has become a crucial need for our community. We are deeply thankful to Philippine Airlines for their unwavering support in enhancing connectivity for our region.”

The commitment was formalized on September 12, when Mayor Agda and PAL’s president and CEO, Capt. Stanley Ng, signed an updated agreement to establish the new Wednesday flight. “Philippine Airlines is honored to support Borongan City’s growth. Our commitment to reliable and accessible air travel aligns with the city’s mission of fostering development and bringing hope to Eastern Samar. By expanding our flights, we aim to connect communities and unlock further opportunities for the region,” said Ng during the ceremony.

Since the inauguration of commercial flights on this route in December 2022, the Borongan-Cebu connection has quickly become indispensable for travelers from Eastern Samar. The route has catered to over 19,000 passengers so far, with a notable increase in cargo operations. Mayor Agda highlighted the city’s efforts, such as establishing agricultural and veterinary assistance desks at the airport, which have significantly contributed to the increased cargo volume.

Rupert Ambil II, the city information office chief and chairperson of flight operations, noted the community’s strong demand for a mid-week flight. “We have gained valuable insights from the operations so far, and with the support of national agencies, we hope to add a fourth weekly flight next year,” Ambil shared in a phone interview.

The city of Borongan has also invested in infrastructure to support PAL’s operations, including the donation of a passenger departure terminal to the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines and offering a free shuttle service to and from the airport on flight days.
