Philippine Government Aids 129 Filipinos Amid Laos Cyber Scam Crackdown

VIENTIANE – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has intervened to assist 129 Filipinos caught in a crackdown on a suspected scam hub in Laos, with repatriations already underway for those affected.

According to Philippines News Agency, the DFA has successfully repatriated seven individuals and plans to bring back approximately 75 more following the recent operations against illegal activities in the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone (GTSEZ) in Bokeo Province, Lao PDR. The Philippine Embassy in Vientiane is closely collaborating with Lao authorities and has dispatched a team to Bokeo to facilitate the release and provide support to the distressed overseas Filipinos.

The crackdown began last week when more than 700 foreign nationals were arrested on August 12 at the GTSEZ, which is reputed for illicit activities, including online scams and trafficking. The DFA is covering the costs of flights from Bokeo to Vientiane and then to the Philippines for the affected individuals, as well as accommodations, food, and basic necessities during their transition.

“The team stands ready to assist Filipinos who may still be remaining in the Golden Triangle and will continue to work with Lao authorities to ensure their safety,” Daza added, highlighting the ongoing efforts to secure and support Filipinos involved in the incident.
