Philippine Paralympians Receive Strong Support at 17th Paralympic Games in Paris

PARIS — Philippine athletes competing in the 17th Paralympic Games received a significant boost from the Filipino community in France, with Philippine Ambassador to France Junever Mahilum-West rallying support for the nation’s quest for medals. The encouragement comes as four Filipino Paralympians vie for podium finishes in various sports.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Filipino community’s support is crucial as athletes like para swimmers Ernie Gawilan and Angel Mae Otom, wheelchair racer Jerrold Mangliwan, and javelin thrower Cendy Asusano compete in the second half of the Games. Mahilum-West emphasized the importance of supporting these athletes to inspire future generations during a special event held at the Philippine Embassy.

Ernie Gawilan is set to compete in the men’s 400m freestyle S7, with potential finals appearances early Tuesday. Angel Mae Otom will participate in the women’s 50m backstroke S5 and the 50m butterfly S5, while Jerrold Mangliwan and Cendy Asusano will also have their respective events in the coming days. The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Philippine Paralympic Committee (PPC) have facilitated this participation, aiming to promote the values of determination, inspiration, courage, and equality.

Michael Barredo, PPC president, highlighted the efforts to enhance para sports in the Philippines and align with the global movement for inclusion. PSC Chairman Richard Bachmann also acknowledged the learning opportunity presented by the Games to assess and improve support for Filipino para athletes.
