Philippine Senate Unanimously Ratifies Four International Treaties

Manila – The Philippine Senate on Tuesday achieved unanimous ratification of four pivotal international treaties aimed at enhancing labor conditions, facilitating prisoner transfers, aiding tax compliance, and boosting agricultural development. The concurrences, under Senate Resolution Nos. 1145 through 1148, mark significant advancements in diverse areas of governance and international cooperation.

According to Philippines News Agency, SRN 1145 led by Senator Imee Marcos, endorses the International Labor Organization Convention No. 81, which pertains to labor inspection in industry and commerce. Senator Joel Villanueva expressed gratitude towards his colleagues for their support, emphasizing the treaty’s role in bolstering the enforcement of decent work standards and promoting sustainable compliance among workers and employers.

Further, SRN 1146, concerning a treaty with Canada on the transfer of sentenced persons, outlines procedures for Filipino citizens to serve sentences in their homeland, thereby easing their reintegration. Senator Marcos highlighted the challenges faced by deported Filipinos lacking support systems, stressing the importance of such agreements in enhancing the prospects for rehabilitation.

SRN 1147 involves the ratification of the Convention on Mutual Administrative Assistance in Tax Matters. This treaty is designed to facilitate various forms of administrative cooperation between signatory countries, aiming to combat tax evasion and avoidance through measures such as document service and asset freezing.

Lastly, SRN 1148 allows the International Fund for Agricultural Development to establish a country office in the Philippines, promising to strengthen support for the nation’s agricultural sector.

Each of these resolutions was passed with the intent to foster improved international relations and internal policy efficacy, reflecting the Senate’s commitment to progressive governance and the welfare of its citizens.
