Philippines Declares New Annual Event to Boost Paddling Sports

MANILA – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has announced a new initiative aimed at establishing the Philippines as a top destination for paddling enthusiasts around the world. The proclamation, titled “Moving Forward Paddling Week Philippines,” sets aside the fourth week of October each year to celebrate and promote paddling sports across the nation.

According to Philippines News Agency, Proclamation 699, signed on October 2, tasks the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) with leading the coordination and supervision of this annual event. The PSC is also responsible for identifying and implementing various programs, activities, and projects that will mark the celebration each year.

The initiative is part of broader efforts by the Philippine government to boost sports tourism and engage local communities in paddling as both a sport and recreational activity. The proclamation underscores paddling as a symbol of “unity and strength” and is seen as a means to navigate challenges collectively, promoting personal growth, resilience, and excellence among Filipinos.

Furthermore, all national government agencies, government-owned or -controlled corporations (GOCCs), state universities and colleges (SUCs), along with local government units, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), professional associations, and private sector entities are encouraged to support the PSC in realizing the goals set out in Proclamation 699.

Highlighting the significance of this new observance, the Philippines will host the 2024 International Canoe Federation Dragon Boat World Championship in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan, from October 28 to November 4, coinciding with the 2024 Moving Forward Paddling Week.
