Philippines to Prosecute Recruiters of Citizens Rescued in Laos Cyber Scam

QUEZON CITY — The Philippines is set to initiate legal action against individuals responsible for recruiting Filipino nationals who were caught up in a cyber scam in Laos, with government officials committing to support the victims upon their return.

According to Philippines News Agency, during a Saturday News Forum, the Philippine authorities plan to gather statements from the rescued individuals to help identify and charge the recruiters involved. Cacdac stated, “DMW particularly stands ready to help upon arrival of the… I would call them victims of illegal recruitment and human trafficking. We will work with the DOJ (Department of Justice) in terms of filing the necessary charges.”

The crackdown that led to the rescue occurred in the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone (GTSEZ) in Bokeo Province, Laos, where at least 129 Filipinos have sought assistance following their ordeal. So far, seven have returned to the Philippines, and approximately 75 more are currently being processed for repatriation. More than 700 foreign nationals were arrested on August 12 at the GTSEZ, an area notorious for its connection to illicit activities including online scams and human trafficking.

Secretary Cacdac also highlighted that the rescued Filipino victims would receive assistance as directed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. He further cautioned the public against unlicensed recruiters promising employment opportunities in other Southeast Asian countries. Cacdac advised, “You need a contract that will go through the DMW for clearance. That is important so you won’t fall victim to an illegal recruiter,” emphasizing that the visa-free arrangement for Filipinos in select states is intended only for tourists, and working abroad requires a proper work visa.
