PM Pledges Cooperation with National Assembly for AI Industry Legislation

SEOUL: Prime Minister Han Duck-soo announced on Wednesday that the government of South Korea will work closely with the National Assembly to swiftly enact legislation designed to support the advancement of the artificial intelligence (AI) industry. The initiative underscores a commitment to establish a legal framework that encourages industry growth while prioritizing the safe use of AI technology.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Prime Minister Han emphasized the significance of the proposed AI Act during a conference in Seoul. The Act aims to facilitate the development of the AI sector by providing necessary support for research and investment, building infrastructure, and nurturing skilled professionals. Han stated, “The government will closely communicate with the National Assembly to promptly pass the AI Act,” highlighting the administration’s willingness to invest resources in the burgeoning field.

The proposed legislation, titled the Act on Industry and Framework for Establishing Trustworthy AI, was
initially introduced in 2021. However, progress has been stalled due to political disagreements. If enacted, the law would unify seven AI-related bills that have been put forward since 2022, providing a comprehensive policy framework.

In an effort to bolster its AI capabilities, South Korea established a presidential committee last month to devise a national AI strategy and align research and development initiatives. This move is part of a broader ambition to position the country among the top three global leaders in AI technology by the year 2027.
