PNP Monitors New, Cheaper Variant of Illegal Drug Linked to Chinese Nationals

MANILA — The Philippine National Police (PNP) is intensifying its surveillance of a newly discovered illegal drug in the country, which is reportedly a cheaper and less toxic variant of shabu. The substance, identified as methyl amphetamine, was found during recent anti-drug operations in Pasay and Parañaque, leading to the arrest of three Chinese nationals.

According to Philippines News Agency, this new drug resembles liquid shabu but can also be converted into a solid form. “The liquid substance can crystalize, and while it might appear to be ordinary distilled water, it produces significant effects and odor when processed,” Matta explained during a press briefing at Camp Crame in Quezon City.

Matta noted that drug syndicates have been using social media platforms to sell this new type of drug. However, he assured the public that the police are continuously innovating strategies to combat the illegal drug trade. “Our regional police offices have been successful in arresting individuals and confiscating illegal drugs, and we are committed to stopping these substances from entering our country,” he added.

In addition to monitoring this new drug, Matta revealed that the PNP is also investigating reports of local officials involved in the distribution and proliferation of illegal drugs. These activities are allegedly aimed at generating funds for the upcoming midterm elections. “We are currently validating these reports and working on case buildups against these officials,” Matta stated.

In related developments, PDEG agents seized PHP81.6 million worth of shabu in separate operations in Manila and Bulacan on Thursday. In Marilao, Bulacan, authorities arrested two suspects, alias ‘Janex,’ 28, and alias ‘Jeny,’ 19, both identified as high-value targets (HVTs). They were found in possession of 1 kilogram of shabu valued at PHP6.8 million.

Later in Manila, police arrested two additional suspects, alias ‘Jeboy,’ 37, and alias ‘Rodel,’ 45, also classified as HVTs and members of a major drug syndicate. The operation in Barangay 676, Ermita district, led to the seizure of approximately 11 kilograms of shabu worth PHP74.8 million, along with other non-drug evidence.

All suspects are expected to face charges for violating Republic Act 9165, the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
