Manila: The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) is gearing up to deploy its full manpower over the forthcoming long weekend, as the agency anticipates over 1.6 million passengers will converge in ports across the nation for the traditional “Undas” exodus.
According to Philippines News Agency, PPA General Manager Jay Santiago has issued directives requiring department heads to ensure an adequate number of personnel are present, covering everything from port operations to security. In light of the anticipated surge in travelers, Santiago has invalidated all leaves of absence for PPA employees from October 25 to November 4. Santiago emphasized the importance of full service during this period, noting that the observance of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day also supports domestic tourism.
The PPA projects that around 1,621,529 passengers will travel through its ports during this year’s Undas, marking a five percent increase compared to last year’s figure of 1,544,313. The previous year saw the highest passenger t
raffic recorded by the Port Management Office (PMO) of Panay/Guimaras, with 146,781 passengers, closely followed by PMO Batangas, PMO Mindoro, PMO Negros Orr/Siquijor, and PMO Bohol.
In addition, Santiago addressed the impact of Severe Tropical Storm Kristine, which caused approximately PHP110.76 million in damages to ports nationwide. He confirmed that there are no major damages at present and that all ports have resumed operations. Santiago also instructed port managers to prioritize assistance for relief operations, particularly focusing on power restoration teams and government delivery trucks in areas affected by the storm.
