President Marcos Declares October 15 National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day

MANILA – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has proclaimed October 15 as National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day, a new annual observance dedicated to increasing awareness and providing support for families affected by such tragedies.

According to Philippines News Agency, Proclamation 700 was signed by the President on October 2, establishing a specific day to acknowledge the grief experienced by families and to enhance the supportive services available to them. This day is set aside to remember the infants lost during or shortly after pregnancy and to honor the families who endure these profound losses. The proclamation underscores the need for comprehensive support services including mental health care, community programs, and informed healthcare guidance.

The observance not only brings attention to the emotional and psychological impacts of pregnancy and infant loss, which can be influenced by factors such as maternal age, prior losses, health conditions, lifestyle, and maternity care, but it also serves as a day for remembrance and honor.

Further detailing the observance, the proclamation repealed a previous declaration for March 25 as the ‘Day of the Unborn’ and established new directives under the leadership of the Department of Health (DOH). The DOH is tasked with coordinating and supervising the day’s observance and identifying appropriate programs, activities, and projects.

Additionally, the proclamation calls for the participation of all government agencies, government-owned or -controlled corporations, state universities and colleges, local government units, non-government organizations, professional associations, and the private sector in supporting and implementing the annual event.
