President Yoon Calls for Enhanced Police Action Against Emerging Crimes Including Deepfakes


Seoul: President Yoon Suk Yeol emphasized the need for increased police vigilance and capabilities to tackle both traditional crimes and emerging threats such as deepfakes during the 79th Police Day ceremony at the Korean National Police Agency headquarters.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Yoon highlighted the challenges posed by new crimes facilitated by advancements in technology, including artificial intelligence-driven deepfakes and fake news. He stressed the importance of police upgrading their investigative methods to keep pace with rapid technological changes. “Police must drastically enhance their advanced investigative capabilities in line with the rapid pace of technological development,” Yoon remarked.

In addition to combating digital falsehoods, Yoon urged law enforcement to focus on crimes that directly impact ordinary citizens by imposing stricter penalties and dismantling the financial networks that support criminal activities. He specifically pointed out the necessity of accelerating the de
velopment of systems to identify fake and manipulated content and called for a cooperative effort with various agencies to combat digital sex crimes effectively.

Moreover, Yoon directed police attention towards crimes against minors and vulnerable groups, advocating for strong initial responses to offenses like stalking, domestic violence, and child abuse to deter perpetrators. He also emphasized the need for comprehensive victim support systems, including protection facilities and psychological assistance, to ensure the safety and recovery of those affected.
