According to Yonhap News Agency, the quintuplets-two girls and three boys-were born last Friday to parents employed in public education. The President’s letter, delivered by his senior secretary for low birth rate issues, You Hye-mi, expressed joy and optimism for the family’s future. “It is everyone’s joy that a set of quintuplets, which are rare globally, were born healthy in our country,” Yoon wrote. He further committed to supporting the family, stating, “I will work to ensure Mom, Dad, and the five children can jointly create a happy future.”

The gifts from President Yoon included clothes in five different colors and seaweed, traditionally used in Korea to prepare nutritious soup for
postpartum mothers. The family, residing 39 kilometers north of Seoul, will also benefit from various government supports designed to ease their financial burden. These supports include financial assistance for household and medical expenses, as well as additional scholarships and interest exemptions for tuition loans.

This gesture comes at a time when South Korea faces significant demographic challenges, with a total fertility rate that dropped to a record low of 0.72 in 2023. President Yoon has previously described the situation as a “demographic national emergency,” emphasizing the need for policies to encourage higher birth rates to maintain the population without relying on immigration.
