Seoul: The presidential office announced on Wednesday that it plans to commence discussions with Ukraine this week regarding the visit of Kyiv’s special envoy to South Korea. This move comes as both nations have committed to enhancing their response strategies against North Korea’s troop deployment to Russia.
According to Yonhap News Agency, a senior presidential official revealed intelligence assessments from South Korea and its allies, indicating that at least 11,000 North Korean troops have been sent to Russia. Some of these troops are reported to be stationed in Russia’s western region, near the Ukrainian border. This deployment has prompted a coordinated response between South Korea and Ukraine.
During a recent phone conversation with President Yoon Suk Yeol, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his intention to dispatch a special delegation to South Korea. The delegation aims to collaborate on actions in response to the North Korean troop deployment to Russia. “It will take a day or two f
or the Ukrainian side to designate a special envoy and finalize a plan to visit and hold discussions here,” the senior official noted, speaking to reporters under the condition of anonymity.
When queried about the possibility of South Korea supplying 155-millimeter artillery shells to Ukraine, the official emphasized that no request has been made by Ukraine and that such a plan is currently not under consideration.
