Pro-Yoon PPP lawmaker offers to resign as party policy chief

A ruling party lawmaker considered close to President Yoon Suk Yeol offered to resign as the party’s policy committee chief Thursday, after new party leader Han Dong-hoon publicly called for key party officials to step down.

Rep. Jeong Jeom-sig of the ruling People Power Party (PPP) made the announcement a day after Han openly requested all PPP leadership appointed by the former party leader step down from their positions following a closed-door meeting with Yoon earlier this week.

“I will resign as the PPP policy committee chief as of this minute,” Jeong said in a press conference at the National Assembly.

Jeong emphasized that he made the decision to “prevent a fissure in our party.”

“I didn’t suddenly change my mind, I heard about the party leader’s opinion about my resignation … I thought about this a lot afterwards and talked a lot with the floor leader,” Jeong said.

Han’s call for the resignation of the PPP party leadership was seen as being made with consent from Yoon, as Han made the request af
ter a 90-minute talk with the president on Tuesday.

Han, former justice minister and PPP emergency committee chief, was elected the new PPP leader at a national convention last week.
