Public Urged to Prepare for Impending Typhoon Kristine

MANILA: Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. has urged the public to take early precautions and remain vigilant as a new weather disturbance is expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) within the next 24 hours. The announcement underscores the need for proactive measures amid predictions of significant impact from the approaching storm.

According to Philippines News Agency, the low-pressure area off Virac, Catanduanes, is predicted by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) to develop into a tropical depression imminently. Once it enters the country, the system will be named Kristine, marking the 11th tropical cyclone of the year. Teodoro emphasized the importance of staying informed and engaging in proactive planning to ensure adequate preparation for the storm’s effects.

Teodoro also noted that the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has conducted predictive analyses indicating that over a million individuals could be
affected by Kristine. Collaborative efforts are underway with all concerned agencies to establish a comprehensive and cohesive action plan, he added.

The Mines and Geosciences Bureau has reported that 5,688 villages are at risk of landslides and flooding in regions projected to be impacted by Kristine. The tropical cyclone is anticipated to make landfall on the eastern coast of Cagayan by Thursday, with potential to traverse northern Luzon. Forecast models suggest that Kristine could reach typhoon intensity before landfall, raising concerns over the potential damage.

Rainbands associated with the potential tropical cyclone may bring moderate to heavy rainfall to the Bicol Region, Samar provinces, and other areas starting Tuesday. Despite these projections, all monitored dams are currently under non-flood status, according to the latest updates.
