QC Implements Comprehensive Disaster Response with Pet Rescue Effort

QUEZON CITY: In a pioneering move to safeguard both human and animal lives during disasters, Quezon City has integrated pet rescue and evacuation into its disaster response strategy. The initiative, undertaken amid Severe Tropical Storm Kristine, saw the rescue of at least 32 pets, including dogs, puppies, and cats, which were provided shelter at the pet evacuation center in Barangay Bagong Silangan.

According to Philippines News Agency, the effort was spearheaded by the Quezon City Veterinary Department (QCVD) in collaboration with the QC Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (QCDRRMC). Rex Villanueva, Officer-in-Charge of the QC Animal Care and Adoption Center, emphasized that the rescued animals, all of which have owners, received essential care, including food, vitamins, and anti-rabies vaccinations. Villanueva highlighted the necessity of separating pets from their owners in evacuation centers to prevent incidents and accommodate evacuees who may not be comfortable around animals.

In addition
to caring for pets with owners, the city has made provisions for stray animals affected by the storm, ensuring they receive veterinary assistance at the QC Animal Care and Adoption Center. Villanueva noted that after the storm, pets separated from their owners are reunited through coordination with deputized barangay animal control officers.

The establishment of a pet evacuation center reflects a collaborative effort between the QCVD and the QCDRRMC, with the primary facility situated in Barangay Bagong Silangan. Temporary centers are also set up as needed during emergencies, such as fires.

The QC Animal Care and Adoption Center also serves as a refuge for stray and abandoned animals, with 50 to 70 pets currently available for adoption. Villanueva urged pet owners to remain responsible and ensure their pets’ safety, advising them to care only for the number of animals they can adequately support.

The initiative underscores Quezon City’s commitment to comprehensive disaster response, addressing the needs of
both its human and animal residents in times of crisis.
