QC trike drivers’ income rises after LTO’s anti-‘colorum’ campaign

MANILA: The income of tricycle drivers in Quezon City has increased as a result of the government’s anti-‘colorum’ and ‘no plate, no travel’ campaign in the city, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) said Thursday.

In a statement, LTO Chief, Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II said tricycle drivers operating in areas near malls saw their average daily income increase from PHP800 to PHP1,200 in the past three days.

The data, he said, was based on information relayed by members and leaders of tricycle operators and drivers associations (TODA) in Quezon City.

‘Ito ay isa na namang patunay kung gaano naapektuhan ng colorum vehicles ang kita ng ating mga kaibigan sa transport sector na lumalaban ng parehas (This is another proof of how much colorum or unregistered vehicles affect the income of our friends in the transportation sector who are working just as hard),’ Mendoza said.

He assured that the aggressive campaign against unregistered vehicles and the ‘no plate, no travel’ policy will continue.

‘Makakaas
a kayo ng tuloy-tuloy na operasyon – mula araw hanggang gabi – para maitama natin ang maling gawain ng mga colorum operators at protektahan ang interes ng mas marami nating mga kababayang drivers at operators na gumagawa ng tama (Rest assured that we will continue our operation – from morning to night – to right the wrongs of colorum operators and protect the interests of registered drivers and operators),’ he said.

The ‘no plate, no travel’ policy crackdown began on July 1, with 38 tricycles apprehended on the first day and 32 tricycles on the second day.

The operation is in partnership with the QC local government and TODA leaders and members in Quezon City.

‘Tuloy-tuloy na ito (This will continue) and the success of this operation in Quezon City will serve as our model and motivation to replicate this policy in other parts of the country,’ he said.
