Romualdez Bats for Sufficient Funding for Expanded Centenarian’s Act

Manila: Speaker Martin Romualdez on Thursday supported calls for sufficient funding of the amended Centenarian’s Act, which provides a PHP10,000 cash gift to senior citizens reaching the age milestones of 80, 85, 90, and 95.

According to Philippines News Agency, he welcomed the recent approval of amendments to the Centenarian’s Act under Republic Act (RA) 11982, emphasizing that this amendment is a crucial step toward recognizing and supporting senior citizens. He highlighted the importance of securing the necessary funding to fully implement the law and ensure that all eligible seniors receive their entitlements.

Romualdez expressed his support for proposals from the House Committee on Senior Citizens chairperson, Senior Citizens Party-list Rep. Rodolfo Ordanes, regarding the funding of the law. Ordanes mentioned that the Department of Budget and Management is exploring options to source funds, either from the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s savings or from Unprogrammed Funds of the 2024 General Appropriations Act. Romualdez agreed with this approach, noting the modest amount required and the urgency of delivering the benefits.

Additionally, Romualdez called for clarity in implementing RA 11982, especially for seniors whose birthdays fall between the law’s passage and its publication. He urged that all eligible senior citizens be ensured their benefits within the prescribed timeframe.
