Samar Province Declares State of Calamity Amid Surge in Dengue Cases

TACLOBAN CITY—The province of Samar was placed under a state of calamity on Thursday following a significant rise in dengue fever cases. The Provincial Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Council recommended the declaration, which was approved by provincial board members.

According to Philippines News Agency, Samar recorded 2,013 dengue cases in 24 towns and two cities from January to the second week of August 2024, representing a 307% increase from the 482 cases reported during the same period last year. The mosquito-borne illness has already resulted in 10 deaths in the province this year. The resolution emphasized the urgent need for action to control and eliminate the spread of dengue.

Local authorities are urging the public to practice the 5S strategy for dengue prevention: searching for and destroying mosquito breeding places, self-protection measures, seeking early consultation, supporting fogging activities, and sustaining hydration.

In a related development, Calbayog City, also in Samar, declared a state of calamity on Wednesday due to the rising dengue cases. The city has reported 422 cases from January 1 to August 17, a fivefold increase from the 83 cases recorded during the same period last year. Calbayog City has also logged two dengue-related deaths this year. Mayor Raymund Uy has ordered continued clean-up drives and inspections to eliminate mosquito breeding sites and protect residents from further infections.
