San Beda Red Lions Climb to Second in NCAA with Win Over Arellano Chiefs

San Juan City—San Beda University’s Red Lions secured a solid win against the Arellano University Chiefs with a score of 79-65 on Saturday at the FilOil EcoOil Centre, propelling them to the second spot in the NCAA Season 100 men’s basketball standings.

According to Philippines News Agency, Bismarck Lina, returning from a nine-month hiatus due to an ACL injury, led the charge for the defending champions by scoring 20 points and grabbing seven rebounds in just his third game back. This victory marks San Beda’s fourth consecutive win, bringing their season record to seven wins in ten games. “For somebody who we can rely on in the post, it’s a big thing especially to our shooters,” commented San Beda coach Yuri Escueta on Lina’s performance.

The Red Lions took command early in the game, establishing a decisive 68-41 lead by the third quarter. Additional contributions came from Yukien Andrada, who scored 15 points, and Jomel Puno, who posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. “We did a better job today. One addition was we have to respect our opponent. I think that we’re taking them lightly and we need to respect them, defend correctly,” added Escueta, reflecting on the team’s mindset and strategy.

On the opposing side, Arellano’s efforts were led by Lorenz Capulong, who put up 16 points and five rebounds, but it was not enough to avoid their seventh loss in ten games.

Looking ahead, the NCAA schedule continues with College of Saint Benilde seeking to maintain its lead against San Sebastian College-Recoletos on Sunday. The Blazers, holding a 7-2 record, face the Stags who are struggling near the bottom of the standings. Meanwhile, Letran will match up against University of Perpetual Help in an effort to improve their 6-4 standing.
