Senior Diplomat Engages in Strategic Discussions with Chinese Counterpart in Beijing


SEOUL: Deputy Foreign Minister Chung Byung-won has engaged in comprehensive discussions with China’s Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong, focusing on bilateral relations, North Korea, and other mutual concerns, as reported by Seoul’s foreign ministry.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the meeting occurred in Beijing where Chung Byung-won was present to inaugurate the South Korea-China Friendship Forum, a new platform aimed at enhancing collaborative efforts between the two nations. The forum’s launch was part of Chung’s agenda during his visit to Beijing this week.

During their discussions, Chung and Sun explored various aspects of bilateral ties including high-level diplomatic exchanges and the current situation on the Korean Peninsula. The dialogue also touched upon recent developments such as North Korea’s destruction of inter-Korean liaison offices and its increasing military collaboration with Russia.

In addition to their bilateral discussions, Chung’s visit included interactions with influential Chinese
think tanks. These meetings were aimed at fostering deeper understanding and cooperation on regional and global issues, further extending the scope of discussion beyond immediate bilateral concerns.

The establishment of the South Korea-China Friendship Forum was highlighted by Chung as a significant step towards broadening the avenues for enhancing the relationship between South Korea and China. He emphasized that the forum would act as a critical platform for exploring diverse methods to strengthen ties.
