**Senior Diplomats from South Korea, U.S., and Japan Convene in Seoul Amid North Korean Hostilities**

SEOUL: Senior diplomats from South Korea, the United States, and Japan are set to hold a critical round of vice-ministerial talks in Seoul. This meeting comes in response to recent aggressive actions by North Korea, including the destruction of cross-border roads and allegations of South Korean drone surveillance over Pyongyang. The discussions aim to strengthen trilateral cooperation and address the escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the meeting will feature South Korea’s First Vice Foreign Minister Kim Hong-kyun, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell, and Japanese Vice Foreign Minister Masataka Okano. This trilateral dialogue follows a sequence of provocative acts by North Korea, which has intensified regional security concerns. Prior to the group meeting, bilateral talks are scheduled between Kim and Campbell, as well as between Kim and Okano, set for Thursday.

The recent demolition of roads by North Korea, which signals a severe step back from reconcilia
tion efforts with South Korea, will be a primary focus. North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-un, recently declared the South as the regime’s “primary foe,” abandoning any previous goals for unification. This declaration came alongside threats of dire consequences if South Korea continues its alleged drone surveillance activities over North Korean territory.

The agenda for the Seoul talks is expected to cover strategies to enhance coordination not only among the three nations but also with the wider international community, to effectively respond to North Korea’s challenges. Discussions will also likely touch on the strengthening of the trilateral partnership, especially in light of Japan’s recent political changes with the election of Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and the upcoming U.S. presidential election.

Further, the diplomats may consider the establishment of a secretariat to manage the trilateral cooperation framework more effectively. This initiative follows the commitments made during last year’s Camp Dav
id summit where the leaders of the three countries agreed on a new phase in their partnership and the creation of a “Commitment to Consult” in times of shared threats.

The Seoul meeting marks an ongoing effort to solidify this trilateral alliance, following their previous meeting five months ago in Virginia, where they agreed to establish a coordinating body to institutionalize their cooperative efforts.
