Seoul Launches 24-Hour Call Center to Combat Loneliness Among Residents

Seoul: The Seoul city government announced it will establish a 24-hour call center aimed at supporting citizens who are experiencing feelings of loneliness and isolation. The initiative, titled “Goodbye to Isolation 120,” is set to begin operations in April next year, as part of a broader effort to foster a community where no individual feels alone.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the new service seeks to intervene early in cases of loneliness, seeking to prevent the onset of more severe social withdrawal and reclusion. This initiative comes as part of a five-year plan, with an investment of 451.3 billion won (approximately US$329.9 million) dedicated to tackling this issue. The Seoul city government is taking a proactive approach to what it views as a growing social problem that needs systematic solutions.

In addition to the call center, Seoul will also introduce the Seoul Mind Convenience Store in four different locations across the city next year. These venues will serve as community spaces where reside
nts can gather, interact, and enjoy local offerings such as Seoul Ramyeon, a brand developed by the city. This move is part of an effort to create more inclusive and engaging environments for citizens.

Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon emphasized the collective responsibility to address these social challenges. “Loneliness and isolation are challenges that should be resolved together within a society,” he stated. “We will mobilize all the city’s capacities to facilitate a ‘Seoul without loneliness.'” This statement underscores the city’s commitment to enhancing the well-being of its residents by fostering stronger community ties and support networks.
