Seoul: Some North Korean generals and troops who were sent to Russia to aid Moscow in its war efforts in Ukraine may have been repositioned to battlefield zones, as revealed by South Korea’s spy agency to lawmakers on Tuesday. The National Intelligence Service (NIS) disclosed this information during a closed-door session of the parliamentary intelligence committee. This meeting was attended by Rep. Lee Seong-Kweun of the ruling People Power Party and Rep. Park Sun-won of the main opposition Democratic Party.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the NIS stated that the movement of troops between North Korea and Russia is currently ongoing. They are investigating the possibility that some North Korean personnel, including high-ranking military officials, might be deployed to front-line areas. The agency highlighted that the Russian military is conducting training of over 100 military terms in Russian for North Korean soldiers, indicating challenges in communication due to the language barrier.
The NIS also observ
ed that a Russian aircraft’s travel between Moscow and Pyongyang on October 23-24 was likely related to the transportation of key Russian security officials involved in the deployment of North Korean troops. Furthermore, the agency noted that North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui’s recent visit to Russia probably included discussions on further troop deployments.
