South Korea Aims for Third Consecutive Victory in World Cup Qualifiers Despite Growing Injury List

YONGIN: South Korea is set to pursue their third consecutive win in their World Cup qualification campaign amidst a growing list of injured players as they prepare to host Iraq this week at Yongin Mireu Stadium.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the South Korean national team, currently tied with Iraq at seven points in Group B, leads the group with a superior goal difference. The decisive match, scheduled for 8 p.m. Tuesday, marks their fourth game in the third round of the Asian World Cup qualifiers. Both teams are seeking to strengthen their position in the group, eyeing one of the top two spots that would secure their place in the 2026 World Cup.

The team faced a significant challenge during their last match against Jordan, where they emerged victorious with a 2-0 scoreline despite the absence of key player Son Heung-min due to a hamstring injury. The match also saw Hwang Hee-chan and his replacement Eom Ji-sung leave the field with an ankle injury and a knee injury, respectively, adding to the team’s in
jury woes. In response, head coach Hong Myung-bo called up Lee Seung-woo and Moon Seon-min from Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors to fill the gaps.

The previous game against Jordan not only highlighted the team’s resilience but also showcased the potential of younger players like Oh Hyeon-gyu and Bae Jun-ho, who stepped up in Son’s absence. The defense, under the temporary leadership of Kim Min-jae, was particularly effective, maintaining a tight line that limited Jordan’s opportunities.

The match venue was shifted from Seoul World Cup Stadium to Yongin Mireu Stadium due to concerns over the pitch conditions at the original venue. This change adds another layer of challenge as the team adapts to a new environment for this crucial fixture.

With the injuries mounting, the focus will also be on who will replace Hwang on the left wing. Lee Seung-woo, a top scorer in the K League 1, is a potential candidate, looking to make an impact in his first international appearance since June 2019. Meanwhile, Oh Hyeon-gyu, who score
d his first goal for the national team in the match against Jordan, is a contender for his first international start.

Iraq comes into the match following a narrow 1-0 victory over Palestine, having scored only two goals in their three matches while not conceding any. The defensive strength shown by Iraq will test South Korea’s adaptability and strategy as they aim to maintain their lead in the group.
