South Korea and Japan Resolve Dispute Over Abduction of Opposition Lawmaker.


Seoul: Prime Minister Kim Jong-pil and Japanese Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka successfully held talks in 1973 to address tensions between South Korea and Japan. The meeting marked the resolution of a dispute stemming from the abduction of opposition lawmaker Kim Dae-jung, which had strained diplomatic relations between the two nations.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the abduction of Kim Dae-jung by operatives from the Korean Central Intelligence Agency took place in a Tokyo hotel. This occurred during a period of significant political suppression under the Park Chung-hee government in South Korea. Park, who had recently enacted the Yushin Constitution, expanded executive powers and allowed indefinite presidential terms through indirect elections. The incident was emblematic of the broader suppression of opposition parties in South Korea at the time.
