South Korean Thriller “Exhuma” Secures Special Jury Award at Sitges Film Festival


SEOUL: Jang Jae-hyun’s supernatural thriller “Exhuma” has clinched the Special Jury Award at the Sitges Film Festival in Spain, according to the film’s distributor Showbox.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Sitges Film Festival, known for its emphasis on fantasy and horror genres, recognized “Exhuma” during its 57th edition. This festival has been a significant event in the cinematic calendar since 1968, celebrating innovative and unique genre films from around the world.

“Exhuma,” featuring prominent actors Choi Min-sik and Kim Go-eun, revolves around the eerie and suspense-filled journey of two shamans, a feng shui expert, and a mortician. They collaborate to unravel the enigmatic disturbances plaguing a wealthy family in the United States, starting with the exhumation of an ancestor’s grave in a secluded Korean village. Released in February in South Korea, the film quickly became a blockbuster, drawing nearly 12 million viewers.

In related news from the festival, Nam Dong-hyub’s horror-comedy “Handso
me Guys” won the People’s Choice Award. This film, a remake of the 2010 Canadian film “Tucker and Dale vs. Evil,” stars Lee Sung-min and Lee Hee-jun as newcomers in a rural town who unwittingly unleash a powerful spirit. Since its release in June, “Handsome Guys” has attracted 1.7 million viewers.
