State Universities and Colleges in Philippines Unite for Poverty Alleviation and Sustainable Development

CATBALOGAN CITY: In a concerted effort to combat poverty and promote sustainable development, 26 state universities and colleges (SUCs) along with various stakeholders have pledged their commitment during the 5th International Poverty Conference. The event, hosted by Samar State University (SSU) and Southern Leyte State University, saw a significant increase in collaborative participation compared to its inception in 2017.

According to Philippines News Agency, the conference, held on October 16 and 17 at Summit Hotel, brought together 17 SUCs, a university from Vietnam, six national government agencies, and two local government units. This international assembly aimed to share research and strategies focused on poverty alleviation and sustainable development, offering insights meant to empower underprivileged communities. SSU president Redentor Palencia emphasized the transformative power of research and partnerships, stating that they are instrumental in achieving social transformation.

The conference high
lighted the importance of education in addressing poverty, with Commission on Higher Education Eastern Visayas Director Maximo Aljibe underscoring the need to encourage students to pursue careers that can drive economic growth and job creation. He noted the agency’s support for research projects aimed at alleviating poverty, emphasizing their real-world applications in improving the living conditions of marginalized groups.

The event targeted specific Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Decent Work and Economic Growth, Sustainable Cities and Communities, and Partnership for the Goals. These goals, established by the United Nations in 2015, call for global efforts to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all by 2030.
