Tropical Storm Kristine Destroys Seven Houses on Apo Island

DUMAGUETE: At least seven houses on Apo Island, a popular diving destination in Dauin, Negros Oriental, were destroyed by Tropical Storm Kristine. The storm brought huge waves and strong winds, causing significant damage, according to local officials.

According to Philippines News Agency, Apo Island barangay chairperson Mario Pascobello reported that five houses in Sitio Baybay were severely affected by the storm on Tuesday evening. The destruction was initially caused by massive waves, followed by strong winds in the hours that followed. Additionally, two houses near a school in Sitio Ubos were demolished by a fallen tree, Pascobello added.

An estimated 30 individuals have been displaced and are currently being sheltered by relatives and neighbors on the island. The Philippine Coast Guard has suspended trips of smaller seacraft, effectively cutting off the island from the mainland and delaying the delivery of immediate relief supplies.

Pascobello mentioned that while the names of the victims have been rec
orded and the damage assessed, there is no immediate need for relief aid as the affected families have support from their relatives. Importantly, no casualties have been reported on the island so far.
