Typhoon Julian Maintains Signal No. 1 in Northern Luzon as It Moves Toward Taiwan

MANILA — As Typhoon Julian continues its trajectory toward Southern Taiwan, Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 remains in effect for several areas in Northern Luzon, signaling ongoing strong wind conditions in the region.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) issued an update Wednesday afternoon, confirming that areas such as Batanes, the Babuyan Islands, and parts of Ilocos Norte are still under Signal No. 1. Specifically, the localities of Bangui, Burgos, and Pagudpud in Ilocos Norte are experiencing strong winds due to the typhoon’s movement.

Julian, which was last observed approximately 275 kilometers west northwest of Itbayat, Batanes, has already exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). Despite its distance, it continues to influence weather conditions within Northern Luzon. The typhoon is currently characterized by maximum sustained winds of 165 kilometers per hour near its center and gusts reaching up to 205 kilometers per hour.

The weather bureau has also issued a gale warning across the northern seaboard of Northern Luzon due to the typhoon’s strength. This warning highlights the risks associated with sea travel in the area, advising against operations for most types and tonnages of vessels, including all small seacrafts and motorbancas.

Further developments indicate that Julian may weaken into a remnant low by the weekend while remaining within PAR but at a considerable distance from any part of the Philippines, thus minimizing its potential impact on the country.
