Ulsan: Ulsan HD FC’s head coach, Kim Pan-gon, expressed satisfaction as his commitment and hard work paid off with the team’s victory in the K League 1 title. After assuming the coaching role in July, Kim dedicated long hours to revitalizing the team, leading them to their third consecutive championship.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim took over from Hong Myung-bo, who departed to manage the South Korean men’s national team. When Kim stepped in, Ulsan was at a season-low fourth place in the 12-team league, a position considered disappointing for a team that had secured two consecutive titles. However, Kim guided Ulsan to a decisive 2-1 victory over Gangwon FC, securing the title with 68 points, seven points clear of their closest rivals with just two matches to play.
Kim, who previously coached the Malaysian men’s national team, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead Ulsan. He became the first individual to win a K League title with Ulsan both as a player and as a coach. Reflecting on the achi
evement, Kim acknowledged the pressure to maintain the championship streak but was delighted with the outcome.
Kim admitted that the transition was challenging, as he questioned his decision to take the job. However, overcoming these challenges was crucial, and the trust and cooperation of the players were instrumental in securing the title. Kim highlighted the necessity of adjusting tactics mid-season, which initially faced resistance but eventually gained acceptance among the players.
Addressing concerns about the team’s aging core, Kim emphasized the continued value of experienced players. He noted that the team’s fitness and work ethic were key factors in their sustained success, allowing them to dominate matches consistently. Kim’s leadership and tactical acumen have solidified Ulsan’s position at the pinnacle of the K League.
