Unbeaten UST Dominates Ateneo in SSL Volleyball Showdown

MANILA: University of Santo Tomas clobbered Ateneo de Manila University, 25-11, 25-20, 25-17, to remain unbeaten in the 2024 Shakey’s Super League (SSL) Collegiate Pre-Season Championship at Rizal Memorial Coliseum. The Tigresses’ commanding performance on Sunday marked their fifth consecutive victory in the tournament.

According to Philippines News Agency, UST’s wing spiker Angeline Poyos was the standout player, delivering 17 points exclusively from attacks. Jonna Chris Perdido supported the effort with nine points, making a significant impact in the first set with six points. Regina Grace Perdido added eight points, contributing six in the decisive third set. Margaret Altea’s defensive prowess was evident with three blocks, bringing her total to seven points. The Tigresses executed an impressive 11-4 run to seize a 14-10 lead in the third frame, ultimately securing the match in one hour and 25 minutes, despite Ateneo’s brief rally to 14-16.

On the opposing side, Alexis Ciarra Miner led Ateneo’s Lady Eagl
es with eight points, including five attacks, two blocks, and one service ace. UST is scheduled to face Far Eastern University on Friday, while Ateneo will compete against the University of the Philippines on Saturday.

In another match, University of the East outplayed College of Saint Benilde, registering a 25-19, 25-18, 25-23 victory. Casiey Monique Dongallo spearheaded the Lady Warriors’ effort with 16 points, primarily from 15 attacks and one block. Teammates KC Cepeda and Jelaica Faye Gajero each added seven points, while Riza Nograles chipped in with five points during the one hour and 21-minute contest. The Lady Blazers’ Clydel Catarig and Mary Grace Borromeo contributed 12 and nine points, respectively.
