USFK Resumes Full-Scale Training Drills at Pocheon Live-Firing Range

Pocheon: U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) has resumed full-scale training operations at the Rodriguez Live Fire Complex in Pocheon, a decision facilitated by an agreement with local authorities and community representatives, the defense ministry announced Monday. This restoration of operations ends a six-year period of restricted training activities due to safety concerns from nearby residents.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the defense ministry, the agreement was reached between the ministry, Pocheon city government, the 5th Corps, and a residents’ committee. This accord allows for the complete normalization of USFK’s training drills, including those involving Apache helicopters, at the Yeongpyeong range, located approximately 25 kilometers south of the Demilitarized Zone.

The ministry outlined that the decision comes after challenges that began in January 2018, when training was scaled back following incidents involving stray bullets. These incidents had sparked significant protests from local residents, concer
ned about safety. In response to these concerns, and as part of the new agreement, a special committee will be formed to oversee the establishment of a community sports and cultural facility. This facility is intended for both the residents and USFK personnel, aiming to foster better relations between the two groups.

The ministry added that this renewed collaboration and the restoration of full training capabilities are expected to strengthen the South Korea-U.S. combined defense posture by providing more stable and comprehensive training conditions for the USFK.
