White House Celebrates Filipino American History Month, Honors Frontline Workers

WASHINGTON: United States President Joe Biden has paid tribute to Filipino and Filipino-American frontliners, professionals, and community leaders as part of the Filipino American History Month (FAHM) celebrations in October. The president emphasized the significant contributions of the Filipino-American community to the nation’s history and culture.

According to Philippines News Agency, in a message dated October 21, President Biden acknowledged the “proud history and heritage” of the Filipino-American community in the United States. He praised them as community leaders and service members who not only advocate for their communities but also risk their lives as first responders to ensure the safety of others. Biden highlighted the diverse roles Filipinos and Filipino-Americans play in society, from athletes and artists to entrepreneurs, engineers, public servants, and health care workers.

The observance of Filipino American History Month was officially recognized by the U.S. Congress in 2009, with various
states passing resolutions to commemorate the event. The celebration marks the arrival of the “Luzones Indios” aboard the Spanish galleon Nuestra Senora de Esperanza on October 18, 1587, at Morro Bay, California, which is recognized as the first recorded presence of Filipinos in the continental United States.

Biden further expressed hope that the celebration brings a sense of pride to Filipino and Filipino-American leaders and visionaries nationwide. He stated that the achievements and aspirations of this community contribute significantly to the broader narrative of the American dream and are a source of optimism for the country’s future.

The United States is home to over four million Filipinos and Filipino-Americans, who are employed across various sectors, including health care, business, and public service. According to the 2021 U.S. census, Filipinos constitute the third-largest Asian-American group, following the Chinese and Indian communities.
